Welcome to Smoke Free Essex
Tobacco Control Alliance

As part of the NHS Cancer Plan (September 2000), Health Authorities were charged with developing a Tobacco Alliance whose aim is to implement tobacco policy at a local level and develop local smoking cessation and prevention services.

A Tobacco Alliance is a collaboration between multi-agency parties that pursue a set of agreed goals for local delivery in line with regional and national strategy. Smoke Free Essex Tobacco Control Alliance was launched in November 2004. Members of the Alliance are:

• Health Service
• Trading Standards
• Environmental Health
• Customs and Excise
• Local Authorities
• HM Prison Service
• Council for Voluntary Service.

The aims of the Alliance are to:

• Reduce public and workplace exposure to second-hand smoke
• Reduce the uptake of tobacco use
• Educate and inform the residents of Essex so they are equipped to make healthy choices.

The group meets on a quarterly basis.
